CFS History

In the fall of 1979, St. Aloysius, St. Wenceslaus, and Our Lady of Seven Dolors opened its doors as Calmar, Festina, Spillville, (CFS) Consolidation of Parochial Schools.  At this time Grades 1 and 2 attended the Festina Center, Grades 3,4,and 5 attended the Spillville Center, and Grades 6,7, and 8 attended the Calmar Center.  A Board of Education was created with three representatives from each of the three parishes.  In May 1992, the Festina Center closed its doors due to the deteriorating condition of the school. Grades 1 and 2 moved down to Spillville with grades 3 and 4 and grades 5-8 at the Calmar Center.  The Festina School was demolished in 1999 and a Parish Hall now stands in its place.

As the trend for high importance of education continued, the CFS Board realized the need to provide a preschool and kindergarten curriculum.  The first preschool class was taught at the Calmar Center in 1998.  The first kindergarten class started in 1998 at the Calmar Center.  The preschool classes moved  to the Neumann Hall by St. Aloysius Church to accommodate the kindergarten class.  In the school year of 2007/2008 the Kindergarten classroom was moved to the Spillville Center to have the lower elementary grades in one building.  Also, in the school year of 2007/2008 an after school program was added and is held at the Calmar Center.  Currently grades K-3 are located in Spillville, grades 4-8 in Calmar, and the preschool program in the Neumann Center in Calmar.  CFS also has a before school program that opens its doors at 6:30 a.m. and after school program that goes until 6:00 p.m.  The Before and After school program use the Calmar Center and preschool building.

CFS Catholic School strives to provide a high quality education.  The Catholic School enhances students with religion classes, weekly mass, community service opportunities, and preparation for sacraments.  Vocal lessons are offered for 7th and 8thgrade, piano for grades 4-8, and instrumental lessons for grades 3-8 are available.  Reading programs like Title One and Click n Read are utilized for the students as well as computer and technology curriculum.  Also, band is offered for grades 5-8 and when they begin seventh grade they go over to the middle school for band and Algebra 1 is offered for eighth graders if they meet the requirements.

CFS Catholic School students continue to demonstrate excellence through their class work when they leave CFS, and we are proud to note that the majority of the public high school’s valedictorians, top ten of the graduating classes, homecoming court, speech, drama, and musical performers are alumni of CFS Catholic School.  The mission of CFS Catholic School continues to be carried on throughout the years: 'to create a foundation of faith, respect and knowlege."
